While patiently waiting for our 3 Months Of Sun, I have been busy at work this winter season!
I have put myself to the test, to recreate the way I shoot. With the help of many models such as the beautiful Cassidy I have been able to continiouisly learn and grow as a photographer. In this industry you will never stop learning. Nobody on earth "knows it all", which is what makes it SO much fun to learn new things!
Photography has become SO huge in the past 10 years. I remember back when I decided that this was what I wanted there were maybe 3 professional photographers in the area. I can still name them, and still look up to their work!
It seems that everyday there is a new photography page popping up. We are constantly surrounded by new and growing talent. It can start to take a toll on your self esteem, and make you question your own work.... IF you let it....
So what makes anyone different from the next?
Experience and Knowledge.
Staying True to Your Style.
Experience and Knowledge is something I gain every time I am hired to shoot, every time I read a forum, or every time I ask a question. I welcome it OPEN arms.
You know that little spot in your soul that is designed for your passion? That little spot that can easily be torn up and make you want to cry when you don't hear what you want to hear?
That spot is tricky.
If you let your ego get the best of you, you will never grow. If you are unable to take constructive criticism without your ego getting in the way, well good luck on your journey.
If you let that little spot in your soul soak up everything, and not take it all to heart....you'll be just fine. Nobody is the best, but you can certainly try to be YOUR very best with a humble heart.
Staying true to YOUR style.
That TOO can be tricky....(IF you let it)
Here's what I mean. If you see something that everyone is doing, would you automatically want to do it? Like, if jumping off a bridge was the cool thing to do because it was Social Media "hot" would you do it?
Probably? Maybe Not?
Same thing goes for photography and editing. Things are changing ALL the time. Don't change your work style just because there is a new fad. It will die, and so will your work if you don't own your personal style.
This year I am working hard on being the best I can be for myself, by clients, and for my business.
Minnesota...good old freezing cold Minnesota. What can we say other than we love you but despise you all at the same time.
As a photographer the long winter months can certainly bring the blues to your excitement when it comes to shooting, especially outside. We have endured sub zero temperatures for the past few weeks, and let me tell you I was starting to feel blue about it.
I decided to run a Boudoir special (which is still active) to get not only myself feeling good and back into my element but to help other people feel good, do something new, and try to shake the winter depression that we all know and despise.
A model call I did a few weeks back introduced me to working with this stunningly beautiful girl! I am so thankful for it too. This session got me out of my funk and brought me back to my happy place, photography.
I mean, why not use what we have around us? Even if it IS freezing cold....
She look like grown up Elsa from Frozen.
The winter months also give me the option to use my STUDIO! My studio is 1 in a million, it is..trust me.
Once upon a time there was a Morton Building used to house cattle. Actually pregnant cattle. More like pregnant cattle ready to give birth... like right now.
One section was cemented and blocked off to ensure safety and another section was roomed off with a private door for the humans to come in and sleep and watch over the new mommas.
This has now turned into my studio. See I told you 1 in a million! It is not and never will be a fancy store front. It stores my equipment, it can sometimes be drafty, and it still sometimes smells like hay! But you know what? WHAT THE HAY! I LOVE it. Its mine and its the best.
Before it became "loved with stuff".
After "all things photography" were brought though the doors.
Getting back to the point, having the winter blues is no fun. Challenge yourself to find what it is that you love to do, and DO IT! Trust me, it will make these winter months SOOO much better...
Photography=My Happy Place
Until then we will SMILE and dream of our 3 Months of Sun.
